An aqueous dispersion of a polymer, obtainable by emulsion polymerization of compounds (monomers) having unsaturated radicals in the presence of at least two different polymerization regulators A) and B), whereinA) is a compound selected from α-methylstyrene dimer and hydrocarbons which form a pentadienyl or 1-phenylallyl radical on abstraction of a hydrogen atom andB) is a compound having a mercapto group,the amount of B) being more than 2 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of monomers.
