ABSTRACT:
A digital non-linear pre-emphasis/de-emphasis apparatus includes a first filter for multiplying an input signal by a first coefficient varying non-linearly according to the amplitude of the input signal, to thereby change the gain of the input signal, and a second filter for multiplying the gain-altered input signal by a second non-linear coefficient according to the gain value of the input signal to thereby change its passband with respect to the input signal. The apparatus changes the frequency response characteristic according to the input signal amplitude and obtains an emphasis amount. Furthermore, the apparatus selectively adds or subtracts the input signal and the emphasis amount according to a received record or reproduction mode signal, to thereby increase the S/N ratio of a VCR system and enhance the stability thereof.
