A broadband gateway135that combines a broadband modem120and a residential gateway130in a single unit. The single unit features a unique dual bridge, shared module architecture that reduces redundancy in the broadband gateway135at the same time it minimizes interactions between modules in the broadband gateway135. This minimized interaction permits the broadband gateway135to operate at peak efficiency and allows for continued development of portions of the broadband gateway135without necessarily incurring compliance testing for the broadband portion of the broadband gateway135.
