ABSTRACT:
Tungsten carbide/zeolite catalysts useful in the hydrogenation of unsaturated sulfur containing compounds and in particular in the production of tetrahydrothiophene are provided.
Also provided is a process for the production of tetrahydrothiophene from thiophene using the tungsten carbide/zeolite catalysts taught, which effects the selective production of tetrahydrothiophene without producing large quantities of H.sub.2 S and unwanted hydrocarbons.
