DESCRIPTION:
BRIEF SUMMARY
The present invention relates to novel substituted 2-phenylpyridines of the formula I ##STR2## where the variables have the following meanings:
X is a chemical bond, 1,2-ethynediyl or have attached to it a hydroxyl, amino or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino substituent; phenyl ring via the hetero atom, it being possible, if desired, for the last two chains to have a hydroxyl, amino or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino group attached to the carbon atom adjacent to the phosphorous; attached to it one or two of the following substituents: cyano, carboxyl, halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy)carbonyl and/or di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)amino;
Y is oxygen or sulfur;
Z.sup.1 is oxygen, sulfur or --N(R.sup.7)--;
Z.sup.2 is oxygen, sulfur or --N(R.sup.8)--;
R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.7 and R.sup.8 independently of one another are hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -haloalkyl, hydroxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, cyano-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 -alkenyloxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 -alkynyloxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkoxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, amino-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)amino-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 -alkenylthio-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 -alkynylthio-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulfinyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylsulfinyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.3 -alkenylsulfinyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 -alkynylsulfinyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulfonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylsulfonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 -alkenylsulfonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 -alkynylsulfonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -haloalkenyl, cyano-C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkynyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -haloalkynyl, cyano-C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkynyl, hydroxycarbonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy)carbonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio)carbonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, aminocarbonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)aminocarbonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)aminocarbonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, phenyl, phenyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or 3- to 7-membered heterocyclyl or heterocyclyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, it being possible, if desired, for all heterocycles to contain a carbonyl or thiocarbonyl ring member, and it being possible for all cycloalkyl, phenyl and heterocyclyl rings to be unsubstituted or to have attached to them one to four substituents, in each case selected from the group consisting of halogen, cyano, nitro, amino, hydroxyl, carboxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulfonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylsulfonyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)carbonyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl)carbonyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy)carbonyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)carbonyloxy, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl)carbonyloxy and di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)amino, or
