A programmable data bus18,33for allowing more than one cryptographic mode to be used by the same crypto-engine. The programmable data bus18,33has pre-configured parameters electronically stored that are accessed by a message request. Each cryptologic mode has parameters for each component of an encryption module24. The encryption module is reconfigured based on the parameters stored by a command vector table processor20. At least one array32is configured base on the parameters stored in the command vector table processor20to redefine connections between components on the encryption module42thereby re-configuring an existing encryption configuration.
