ABSTRACT:
Pulp of improved refinability for the production of high strength linerboard is obtained by digesting wood chips in alkaline cooking liquor, defibering, treating with oxygen and alkali in the absence of a cellulose protector, and refining. Linerboard pulp produced by this method results in improved paper strength properties. The treatment is conducted in its best mode at temperatures below 100.degree. C. to minimize pulp yield losses.
