ABSTRACT:
Solid aromatic polymers, such as branched polyphenylenes, are reacted with a reactive gas such as a NO.sub.2 -N.sub.2 O.sub.4 mixture, chlorine and sulfur trioxide without solvent or catalyst. The extent of reaction depends on reaction time and temperature and on the concentration of the reactive gas.
