ABSTRACT:
Thinning of a planar illumination device using an LED is accelerated while higher and more uniform brightness is promoted. An LED24constituting the planar illumination device has no lamp house, but a translucent resin that seals an LED chip25is exposed. An outline of the translucent resin is formed as a projecting portion28comprising a continuous curved surface. Moreover, on a side end face12aopposed to the LED24of a light guide plate12, a notch portion12dfollowing the outline of the projecting portion28is formed, and on this notch portion12d, a prism row101made of a plurality of unit prisms extending in a direction crossing the light guide plate12is formed.
