ABSTRACT:
A single integrated circuit microcontroller10includes an embedded erasable/programmable non-volatile memory12having a read protection capability. Microcontroller10can operate within a special mode in which external circuits may access memory12by use of input/output pins18. When microcontroller10activates this special mode, a read protection flag13within memory12is checked. The read protection flag13may be set during production of the microcontroller10after instructional data or firmware has been installed onto memory12. If the read protection flag13has been set, only certain portions of the memory12may be read, depending upon the value of the read protection flag13.
