ABSTRACT:
A method is provided for the synthesis of an .alpha.-methyl-.beta.-acylthiopropionate of formula I: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently selected from C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl of the formula C.sub.6 H.sub.2 R.sub.3 R.sub.4 R.sub.5 wherein R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are independently selected from hydrogen, lower alkyl, F, Cl, Br, NO.sub.2, CN or R.sub.6 O wherein R.sub.6 is lower alkyl. The method comprises reacting methyl methacrylate with a thiocarboxylic acid at a mole ratio ranging between about 1:1 and about 2:1 and at a temperature ranging between 40.degree. C. and about 150.degree. C. The reaction is conducted either in the presence of an organic solvent or in the presence of polymerization inhibitors for approximately 3 to 6 hours. .alpha.-Methyl-.beta.-acyl-thiopropionates are obtained economically by the disclosed method in high purity and yields and in shorter reaction times relative to conventional processes.
