ABSTRACT:
A television system capable of generating a high-resolution television signal having a wider than standard aspect ratio and which is compatible with standard television receivers. In an NTSC format, the high-resolution television signal includes picture frames having a 51/3:3 aspect ratio, 787 scanning lines and 3-90 Hz fields. This television signal is converted into two transmission signals, a first of which being compatible with standard television receivers and including, in a first field, the sum-average of the information from two of the high-resolution television signal fields and, in a second field, information from the remaining high-resolution television field, while the second of which includes the remaining information in the high-resolution television signal.
