ABSTRACT:
The present invention relates to a new type of electric furnace and process for its use for highest purity melting of certain metals and semiconductor materials, particularly it is well suited for melting materials that would react chemically with standard refractory crucible materials thus potentially resulting in a contamination of such melt. The present invention utilizes a skull, formed to fit within a heat absorbing container, the skull formed from the metal or semi-conductor material to be melted, heating of such material being accomplished by a direct resistance coupling through electric contacts of a high frequency alternating current source to the material that utilizes the proximity effect involved with a high frequency current passed through a conductor with the forward current conductor of the present invention being arranged across and proximate to the melt surface thereby causing a return current to reproduce, in the melt, the shape of the forward conductor thereabove providing direct resistance heating of the melt.
