Water-containing, free-flowing and pumpable alkyl sulfate pastes having a viscosity, as measured at a shear rate of 10 s.sup.-1, of 5 Pa.s to 100 Pa.s and preferably 5 Pa.s to 50 Pa.s at temperatures of 50.degree. to 90.degree. C. which contain an alkyl sulfate corresponding to formula I:
