ABSTRACT:
An ignition system comprises first and second series supply circuits including an ignition coil having a primary winding and a set of breaker contacts serially connected to said primary winding of said ignition coil, said first and second sets of breaker contacts having different opening times. A thyristor is connected in at least one of the two circuits. A firing signal is applied to the thyristor in accordance with the mode of operation of an associated engine, to enable the conduction of said thyristor in a first ignition mode being effected by said first and second sets of breaker contacts and in a second ignition mode being effected by either one of said first and second sets of breaker contacts.
