In one aspect, the present invention provides a novel thiophene-containing polynitrone compound having structure (II)wherein R1is independently at each occurrence a C1-C20aliphatic radical, a C3-C20cycloaliphatic radical, or a C2-C30aromatic radical; R2is independently at each occurrence hydrogen, deuterium, a C1-C20aliphatic radical, a C3-C20cycloaliphatic radical, or a C2-C30aromatic radical; and “a” is an integer from 2 to 4.
