ABSTRACT:
The invention pertains to the composition of a novel polymeric initiator and method for initiating the polymerization of vinyl monomers into water soluble polymers or block copolymers. The polymeric initiator has the formula: ##STR1## wherein M is H or a cation, R.sub.1 is a linear or branched lower alkylene group having from about 1 to 8 carbon atoms, R.sub.2 is H or a lower alkyl group having from about 1 to 5 carbon atoms and n is from 1 to 10. The resulting water soluble block copolymers are very useful in sludge dewatering applications.
