ABSTRACT:
A single integrated circuit microcontroller10including embedded erasable/programmable non-volatile memory12having a read protection. Microcontroller10can operate within a special mode in which external circuits may access memory12by use of input/output pins18. When microcontroller10activates this special mode, a read protection flag13within memory12is checked. The read protection flag13may be set during production of the microcontroller10after instructional data or firmware has been installed onto memory12. If the read protection flag13has been set, the contents of memory12are erased or reprogrammed prior to allowing access to memory12. In this manner, external circuits cannot access instructional data or firmware that is stored in memory12.
