DESCRIPTION:

BRIEF SUMMARY
The present invention relates to novel substituted 2-phenylpyridines of the formula I ##STR3## where the substituents have the following meanings:
R.sup.1, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 independently of one another are hydrogen, halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, hydroxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkyl)-carbonyloxy, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -haloalkyl)carbonyloxy, SH, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulfinyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulfonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylsulfinyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylsulfonyl, formyl, cyano, hydroxycarbonyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy)carbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy)carbonyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy)-carbonyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)carbonyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl)carbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)carbonyl, CONH.sub.2, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)amino-carbonyl, di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)aminocarbonyl, pyrrolidinylcarbonyl, piperidinylcarbonyl, morpholinylcarbonyl, nitro, amino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino, di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)amino, pyrrolidinyl, piperidinyl, morpholinyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)carbonylamino, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl)carbonylamino or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulfonylamino;
R.sup.2 is halogen, cyano, nitro, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio or
together with R.sup.1 or with R.sup.3 is a trimethylene or tetramethylene chain;
Ar is a radical ##STR4## where
R.sup.5 is hydrogen or halogen;
X is oxygen or sulfur;
R.sup.17 is halogen, cyano, nitro, hydroxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy or trifluormethyl;
R.sup.18 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -haloalkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl and
R.sup.19 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl phenyl ring, forms one of the following bicyclic rings (a) to (1): ##STR5##
R.sup.6, R.sup.7 and R.sup.10 independently of one another are hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkynyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -haloalkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -haloalkenyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -haloalkynyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkoxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, 1-phenylpropen-3-yl, cyano-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, (1-methylthiocycloprop-1-yl)-methyl, carboxyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkoxy)carbonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -haloalkoxy)carbonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkoxy)carbonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkoxy)carbonyl-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkoxy)carbonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkoxy)carbonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkyl-aminocarbonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkyl)aminocarbonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulfonyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenyloxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkylcarbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkoxycarbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkoxy, oxetan-3-yl-oxycarbonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, thietan-3-yl-oxycarbonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, oxetan-3-ylmethyl, 3-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)-oxetan-3-ylmethyl or benzyl, which can be unsubstituted or can carry one to three radicals selected from the group consisting of halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl and C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy;
R.sup.8 and R.sup.9 independently of one another are hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, hydroxycarbonyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy)carbonyl or together are ethylene, propylene, butylene, pentylene or hexylene;
