ABSTRACT:
A process for the manufacture of an alkylene glycol having 2 - 4 carbon atoms, which comprises oxidizing an unsubstituted aliphatic olefin having 2 - 4 carbon atoms by contact with a water-soluble thallic salt in the presence of water, characterised in that at least one kind of ions selected from ions of chlorine and bromine is present in the reaction system in an amount such that the atomic ratio of the said ion or ions to thallium atom is at least 5, and said oxidation is carried out at a temperature of 120.degree.- 200.degree.C.
