Thermoplastic, branched, high-molecular weight polycarbonates endowed with properties of flame-resistance (self-extinguishing polycarbonates) are characterized by the presence in their polymeric chain of units deriving from a di-hydroxy-aromatic compound having the formula: ##STR1## wherein: R is a single bond; or is a substituted or non-substituted, linear or branched alkyl group containing from 1 to 5 carbon atoms; or is a group selected from O, S, SO.sub.2, CO;
