A process of preparing a dihydropyrimidine compound of the structure (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are bonded together to form an aromatic or heterocyclic ring, which may be substituted or unsubstituted, or are individually selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, or a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic, carbocyclic, or heterocyclic group;
