A movable barrier controller41has a force control44having a corresponding setting range. As operating conditions change, the barrier controller41can execute a learning mode51. During this mode, the barrier controller41operates the barrier movement motor42and measures53at least one parameter that corresponds to operation of the motor42. This measured parameter is used to determine54a control value which control value is then assigned55to a specific location within the setting range of the force control44.
