Halogenated aromatic polyesters having the recurring structural formula ##STR1## wherein X is chlorine or bromine and Y is hydrogen, chlorine or bromine, with the provision that when X is chlorine, Y is hydrogen or chlorine and when X is bromine, Y is hydrogen or bromine, R and R' may be the same or different and represent lower alkyl groups, hydrogen, or together constitute a cyclic hydrocarbon group, and n is an integer which is at least about 10, are prepared by
