ABSTRACT:
The image compression and expansion device comprises a DCT processing unit in which original image data is subjected to a two-dimensional discrete cosine transformation to obtain DCT coefficients, a quantization process unit in which original image data is quantized by a first quantization table to obtain quantized DCT coefficients and a compression processing unit in which the quantized DCT coefficients are encoded to generate compressed image data. The compressed image data and the first quantization tables are recorded in a recording medium. A second quantization table is also stored in the recording medium. The image expansion device has a switch by which one of the first or second quantization table can be selected. An image is, thereby, reproduced from the compressed image data by using the selected type of quantization table.
