A method of manufacturing polyamides from aromatic dicarboxylic acids and aromatic diamines in the presence of catalytic amounts of a phosphorous-containing catalyst and a 4-diakylaminopyridine as cocatalyst, at temperatures above 180.degree. C., is described.
