A rotary valve for a balloon catheter, including a hollow guidewire with a central lumen and a portion of a rotary shaft disposed within a guidewire proximal end. Rotating the rotary shaft of the rotary valve controls flow of an inflation fluid into and through the guidewire central lumen.
