A backlight for a liquid crystal display device includes a plurality of point light sources1arranged linearly, a light guide plate3having a light incident surface3a, a reflection surface3band a light emitting surface3cfor emitting the light reflected by the reflection surface3b. A light scattering pattern31is formed on the reflection surface3b. A light control pattern32is formed on the reflection surface3bat almost entire portions except for the light scattering pattern31is formed for reflecting the light introduced and for outputting from the light emitting surface3c. A pattern less area is formed on the reflection surface3bat a boundary portion between the light scattering pattern31and the light control pattern32.
