ABSTRACT:
3-Cyanoaldehydes of the formula I ##STR1## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl and R.sup.3 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkyl, are prepared by a process wherein an aldehyde of the formula II ##STR2## is reacted with anhydrous hydrocyanic acid in the presence of a basic catalyst, in a solvent.
