ABSTRACT:
A magnetic recording medium is described, which comprises a support having thereon a magnetic layer mainly comprising a ferromagnetic powder dispersed in a binder, for a magnetic recording/reproduction system of reproducing recorded signals of from 0.15 to 2 G bit/inch.sup.2 of areal recording density with a magneto resistive head (an MR head), wherein the surface of the magnetic recording layer has not more than 100 protrusions having a height of 30 nm or more per 900 .mu..sup.2 measured using an atomic force microscope (AFM), the magnetization reversal volume of the magnetic layer is from 0.1.times.10.sup.-17 to 5.times.10.sup.-17 ml, and the coercive force of the magnetic layer is 2,000 Oe or more.
