ABSTRACT:
What are disclosed are penem compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen, a cation, or an esterifying group and R.sup.1 is alkyl or aryl, methods for making such compounds, methods for using the compounds as a .beta.-lactamase inhibitor or as an antibacterial agent, and pharmaceutical preparations containing the compounds.
