ABSTRACT:
A pregnancy-specific .beta..sub.1 -glycoprotein, characterized by an electrophoretic migration speed in agar gel in the range of the .beta..sub.1 -globulins, a sedimentation constant of 4.6 S.+-.0.5 S, a molecular weight of 100 000.+-.15 000, an extinction coefficient E.sub.1cm.sup.1% of 11.6.+-.0.5 (278 m.mu.; 1/15-molar phosphate buffer, pH 7.0), a carbohydrate content of 28.05.+-.1.55%, comprising 10.7.+-.1.0% of hexoses, 10.0.+-.0.5% of hexosamine, 0.55.+-.0.05% of fucose and 7.0.+-.0.5% of neuraminic acid, and process for isolating it from the placenta or blood or urine of pregnant women. This protein may be used as a reagent and for the preparation of antisera as reagents for the detection of pregnancy and for pre-natal supervision.
