ABSTRACT:
A method is disclosed for controlling the axial collapse of an open cross-sectioned beam. Trusses are attached to the beam in a form to angulate between the flanges of the beam and act as stress stabilizers or load resistors. Depressions are formed in the flanges of the beam located intermediate said trusses. The trusses and depressions each have an axial dimension which is about 1/6-1/2 the spacing between trusses. Upon sufficient loading, the beam collapses with the flanges folding substantially only at said depressions.
