This invention relates to novel intermediates, and novel processes for their preparation, where said intermediates are useful in a novel preparation of 5'-Oxa, 5'-Thia and 5'-Aza derivatives (I) of lovastatin and analogs thereof at the 8'-acyl side chain and 6'-position of the polyhydronaphthyl ring. Said derivatives (I) are useful in treating hypercholesterolermia. ##STR1## A is O, S(O).sub.n or N-R.sub.13.
