ABSTRACT:
The speed ratio of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is adjusted in relation to the actual ratio R.sub.a and a desired ratio R.sub.d so that the time required to change the ratio by any multiplicative step is substantially the same regardless of the ratio provided by the transmission. The ratio error E.sub.r is defined according to the ratio R.sub.d /R.sub.a, and the ratio is adjusted at a rate determined in accordance therewith.
