A nickel positive electrode for an alkaline storage battery comprises an active material mixture mainly composed of nickel hydroxide and a conductive support. The active material mixture contains at least one member selected from the group consisting of cobalt, cobalt hydroxide and cobalt oxide, and carbon powder having a lattice constant "d" of a (002) plane such that 3.35 .ANG.<d.ltoreq.3.45 .ANG..
