ABSTRACT:
A magnetic recording medium with a superior magnetic properties and a high anticorrosive resistance comprises a substrate and a magnetic recording layer formed on the substrate. The magnetic recording layer is composed of first thin films comprising a rare earth-transition metal magnetic alloy and second thin films comprising a non-magnetic material composed of either one of a metal, a semiconductive material or a dielectric material, laminated in at least two sets. Total thickness of a set of the first and second films is within a range from 15 to 100 .ANG..
A method for preparing the magnetic recording medium comprises a first step for forming a thin film from a rare earth-transition metal magnetic alloy on the substrate and a second step for forming a thin film from a non-magnetic material composed of a metal, a semiconductive material or a dielectric material on the substrate, wherein the first and second steps are alternately repeated at least two cycles while rotating the substrate.
