ABSTRACT:
A portable tagging machine, in which a continuous strip of separable tags is indexed by a feed mechanism that is actuated simply by the manual operation of a lever mechanism. Each time the lever mechanism is manually operated, the leading tag of the strip is printed by a printing head, separated from the rest of the strip by a cutter, and stapled by a stapling mechanism to an article of clothing which is inserted into a slot formed in the machine casing. These printing, cutting and stapling mechanisms are all actuated by the manual operation of the lever mechanism. The tagging machine has a return mechanism which is operative to force the stapling mechanism out of contact with the article being tagged so as to remove any obstacle from the advance of the tag strip simultaneously as the stapling operation is finished. There is a positioning mechanism which is operative to firmly hold the strip in position while it is released from engagement with the feed mechanism.
