ABSTRACT:
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of compounds of formula ##STR1## wherein R is unsubstituted or substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or unsubstituted or substituted phenyl, X is hydrogen or unsubstituted or substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, and Y is unsubstituted or substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, which process comprises subjecting compounds of formula ##STR2## wherein R, X and Y are as defined for formula I, to catalytic hydrogenation in the alkaline pH range.
The compounds obtained by the process of this invention are suitable intermediates for the synthesis of dyes.
