ABSTRACT:
An image signal is divided into blocks and encoded in a plurality of encoding modes by different encoding operations, and mode information indicative of an encoding mode with respect to the block are input. A check is made to see if the input mode information is erroneous or not. The input image signal is decoded by using mode information generated for the erroneous mode information in accordance with the mode information of blocks neighboring the block corresponding to the detected erroneous mode information, thereby enabling a preferred image to be obtained even though there is an error in the input mode information.
