ABSTRACT:
A benzimidazolocarbocyanine dye represented by the following general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.11, R.sub.12, R.sub.13 and R.sub.14 each represents a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group; X.sub.11, X.sub.12, X.sub.13 and X.sub.14 may be the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an unsubstituted alkyl group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, an acyl group, an acyloxy group, an alkoxycarbonyl group, a carbamoyl group, a sulfamoyl group, a hydroxy group, a cyano group or a halogen-substituted alkyl group; Y represents an ion required for balancing charge; and m represents 1 or 2, and when the compound forms an inner salt, m is 1, and a silver halide photographic material containing said dye.
