ABSTRACT:
Erosion resistant stopper rod for steel casting having an elongated body of a first refractory material and a sleeve of a second refractory material having elevated erosion resistance characteristics. The sleeve may be copressed with the stopper rod body or separately formed and cemented thereto. The sleeve is positioned around the stopper rod in the region where contact with the slagline occurs. The erosion resistant material of the sleeve is selected from the group consisting of zirconia, magnesia, zirconia-graphite and magnesia-graphite.
