ABSTRACT:
Lactones of the following general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group and n represents an integer of 0 to 10, are produced by reacting a diol, formaldehyde and carbon monoxide in the presence of copper (I) or silver carbonyl complex catalyst in a strong acid.
