ABSTRACT:
A process for producing ethylene copolymers by copolymerizing ethylene with an .alpha.-olefin having 3 to 10 carbon atoms in the gas phase polymerization method in the presence of a catalyst comprising such a solid component, component (A), that a zirconium compound having formed a II-bonding with a conjugated five-membered ring such as bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride is carried on a support of porous particles of a water-insoluble inorganic oxide such as silica which have been preliminarily treated with an alumoxane, and an alumoxane, component (B), characterized in that the alumoxane as the component (B) is in the form of a solution in an aromatic hydrocarbon in a concentration of at least 5% (w/v) and the component (A) and the component (B) are introduced into a polymerization vessel after they have been contacted with each other.
