The invention relates to a zoom optical system that can offer an effective tradeoff between low cost and size reductions, and electronic equipment that incorporates the same. The zoom optical system comprises, in order from an object side thereof, a first lens group G1of negative refracting power, an aperture stop S, a second lens group G2of positive refracting power, a third lens group G3of negative refracting power and a fourth lens group G4of positive refracting power, and satisfies the following condition.in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?2<|dw12−dt12|/|dw23−dt23|<200in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?Here dw12is a spacing between G1and G2at a wide-angle end, dt12is a spacing between G1and G2at a telephoto end, dw23is a spacing between G2and G3at the wide-angle end, and dt23is a spacing between G2and G3at the telephoto end.
