ABSTRACT:
A fuel cell is made, where a porous electrolyte retaining matrix layer, containing acid electrolyte, is disposed between a pair of spaced apart gas diffusion electrodes; where the matrix contains ZrP.sub.2 O.sub.7 and binder, with no more than about a 10 wt. % total of the matrix containing non-binder material reactive with acid electrolyte.
