ABSTRACT:
Water insoluble disperse dyes for aromatic polyester textile material are made by the reaction of an aldehyde intermediate derived from an .alpha.-(N-alkylanilino)m-toluenesulfonamide, typified by .alpha.-(N-ethylanilino)-m-toluenesulfonamide, with a nitrile containing an active methylene group, such as malononitrile. This class of dyes, when appropriately dispersed, produces bright greenish-yellow dyeings on aromatic polyester fabrics with excellent substantivity, outstanding sublimation fastness, and excellent fastness to light. The dyes are applied to polyesters, such as polyethylene terephthalate, by carrier dyeing, pressure dyeing and thermofixation methods.
