ABSTRACT:
A wire stripping machine for stripping the insulation from the ends of a plurality of stranded-core insulated wires and twisting the exposed conductor strands includes upper and lower stripping heads mounted on a support for movement between an open position and a closed, operative position. Each stripping head includes wire separating discs that separate the wires to-be-stripped so that they lie laterally adjacent one another and a stripping element that simultaneously strips the insulation from the ends of the wires and twists the conductor strands. Each stripping element includes an elongated stripping bar having a serrated wire contacting surface and an insulation cutting knife that extends along the length of the stripping bar and presents a cutting edge positioned above the wire contacting surface. In operation, the entire machine is advanced from an initial position over the end of the insulated wires and the upper and lower stripping heads are moved from their open position toward their operative position. The separating discs separate the wires so that they lie laterally adjacent one another while the ends of the wires are restrained between the wire contacting surfaces and the cutting edges penetrate the insulation on the upper and lower sides of the wires. The stripping elements are then moved laterally of the wires in opposite directions to rotate the ends of the wires and cause the cutting edges to peripherally cut the insulation at the end of each wire. The machine is then retracted while the stripping elements continue to move in opposite lateral directions to separate and pull the cut insulation from the end of each wire and simultaneously twist the exposed conductor strands.
