ABSTRACT:
There is disclosed a whispering gallery oscillator for producing a low noise microwave output signal. The whispering gallery oscillator comprises a dielectric resonator1comprising paramagnetic ions34. A pump signal5is coupled by a coupler7to the paramagnetic ions to excite19the paramagnetic ions34. The paramagnetic ions34decay17and thus excite a whispering gallery mode15of the dielectric resonator1. The whispering gallery mode15is coupled by a coupler10to give an output signal9. The whispering gallery mode15has a high Q (Q≈107) resonance. The high Q resonance results in a low-noise output signal9. The paramagnetic ions34act as a MASER that is distributed about the dielectric resonator1. In some embodiments, the whispering gallery oscillator may be locked to a frequency standard.
