ABSTRACT:
A variable speed transmission has a gyratory collar element and a conical element engaged over a portion of their respective surfaces through a friction material. The collar moves toward the base of the cone to increase the gear ratio. Movement of the collar may be controlled manually or automatically using sensors of speed and/or torque. The device may also serve as a clutch by withdrawing the collar from contact with the cone.
